Most beginning students start out learning and playing simple major and minor triads in root position. However, each of these triads has inversions, which are the same set of notes stacked differently than the root position.
If you only know the root positions of these triads, then you can only play the chords in one position per octave. However, if you are fluent in inversions, your options expand. Armed with knowledge of inversions you can play a triad in three positions in each octave. Use different positions to add variety and interest and avoid having to move your hands around so much to get to different chords.
